So high school basketball season has started back up and I'm still enjoying the alien bees! Ive been to a number of games but these are the only photos I feel are worthy of postage. Today has been a bit of a blog post rant but I haven't posted much lately so I feel it was needed.

Got to cover Bev Perdue's inauguration in Raleigh on Saturday morning and Andy Griffith spoke after the swearing in. I ran into Ryan Norman, friend from RCC, and also made a new army friend :P made me remember how much I miss living in a real city. I had a pretty good time and except for waking up at 6:30 am.

I placed 2nd in the General News category for the 2008 North Carolina Press Associations annual newspaper contest thing. Our newsroom had 11 awards total with five first place. First off I would like to thank god and my parents, also no autographs so dont ask, and let me take a knee to pray real quick :D

Hmmm interesting...

This week was pretty interesting, the Nash and Rocky Mount fire departments had a confined space rescue drill and I was able to stand on top of the 80 ft. corn storage silo where they were pulling the rescue dummy out of. I was back in Kenan Stadium last night shooting the 2-A state championship game, Tarboro vs Newton-Conover, interesting enough?

English Mastiff

So I was in Petco about an hour ago shooting standalone photos for Tuesday of Santa posing with pets. This guy had a 140 pound English Mastiff!! The dog was pretty well behaved, though he was like a wondering tank and the guy was having a tough time getting him to sit still as hes only one year old. I want a dog like that now :)

Stuff has picked up now that the holidays have arrived and basketball has started back up so I'm excited to use the alien bees again. But this is what has been going on {:^)

So I was in Best Buy earlier today getting photos for a Black Friday story and this kid really wanted me to take his photo. While looking directly at me he played every note perfectly on medium (cant recall the song) for the entire song. I was really impressed, turns out the guy allegedly doesnt even own the game and plays so often in Best Buy that hes got it memorized. Obviously this wouldnt run in the paper but I was so impressed I wanted to post it.

First college football game I've shot since Elon back in when I was on internship in Burlington. It was suppose to be cold but it turned out to be a really nice day acutally, I had tons of fun and hopefully I'll get to go to some basketball games this season!

Football and Bowling

Wesleyan football from this weekend and my week long coverage of the Mark Bowling Trial. The trial ended yesterday with a plea bargain sentencing Bowling to a minimum of 15 years and to a maximum of 19 years. To say the least, people in our area are livid that he didnt get life.

I heart daytime football

The Down East Viking Football Classic happened yesterday and it was a day full of daytime football. I shot Wesleyan for about an hour and a half right before this game, so I was a happy camper til I got back to the office a realized that I screwed something else up :(

The player on the top photo scores an amazing amount of goals. Matt said he scored 12 in the teams first three games. The middle photo is of midnight basketball held downtown to try and keep kids from getting into gang activity. The football players are from Southern Nash, the front three players are returning starters and the back three are first year starters. I put the older guys in front because I wanted to somehow show they had seniority over the other guys.

The storm wasn't all it was cracked up to be. We had some power lines down and about 2,500 people lost power because of the storm. Other than that there were just a branch here and there.

The tour

These are some shots from the Telegrams annual football tour. The entire sports staff and one photog (me) go to all of the high schools and video/photograph them practicing. This year each school got their own 2-3 min. video posted on the website, today is the second day in the rotation for the videos. I shot all of these at 200mm cause I already had enough stuff to carry (video camera, tripod, and camera bag) so a 12 lb 400mm would have been a big much to lug to eight schools in three days. My primary goal was to shoot video anyway :)

So me and Tres were riding to White Lake...while passing through Clinton, NC we saw this old school on the left side of the road, "should we go back and shoot?" asked Tres...I hesitated but then turned around at the next intersection...this is what I shot and it was spooky in there :(
The only info I got on the school was Chargers which was a painted mascot on the gym building, other than that I have no other info on what it was...I saw a english workbook that had the year 1988 on it...but it was really fun!

Macclesfield

Recently there was a murder in a town near Rocky Mount called Macclesfield. A 13-year-old boy was being punished by his parent by being tied to a tree over night for two separate nights. He died from the second night of punishment. Me and Carolyn went to the house to see if we could find anything, there were four to five other trees that had rope around them like this one. AP called and wanted some photos for the wire and the next day I got a call from my friend Tres and he said he saw this photo on a usatoday.com article about the murder. I was really excited even though the photo is of a tree and some string. I checked myself and here is the link to the story.

A two car accident at the intersection of Sunset Aveune and Winstead Aveune happened around 5:10pm Saturday when a red Blazer (shown) ran a stop light and collided with a taxi cab. No major injuries occured but both passengers in the Blazer were transported to Nash General Hosipital to treat minor wounds.

Ive been busy covering a lot of troops returning and was in Washington DC last week photographing a wounded solider. I will post those as soon as the story runs on Sunday. :)

This kid was posing for a camera phone right next to me as I was shooting. Him and his friend, right, where messing up my photos this whole assignment, trying to get in the paper mugging the camera and all...but at least I got this from it. Im going to print it and hang it on my desk. Oh and I added some blur to make him and his friend stand out more.

Bball Portrait

Added some stuff to it in PS and cropped out another player that was in the photo on the left because the background wasnt as clean as this side is. The background was kinda busted on the left side but it didnt matter for the paper because I was suppose to do a cut out of the players anyways.

Donations, Band, and New Year baby

New Years Decorations

Jim Robbins of Rocky Mount sets up decorations for new years on Wimbery lane Saturday. Robbins is house sitting for his good friends Pace and Ben Winstead and is helping them with the set up. "Pace and Ben have been doing this for four years now. There are at least 50 of these decorations, cars will be bumper to bumper to see this display." says Robbins.

Some shots from the game. No good action at the game tonight so I couldn't capture it. But the motorcycle is right before all the host families sat down to eat.

Spartanburg

Trey was nice enough to let me try his D200 out tonight at the game and I liked it alot, I want one now. I would have had one or two other good shots but I was back focused on the play and I was a little angry. But these turned out nicely.

vs Spartanburg

Tonights game versus Spartanburg was full of action but the Copperheads still lost. The giant cart goes to each field within the league to help raise money for cancer.

Dark cloud over Copperheads season as they are a league worst 13-29

The bottom photo is suppose to be in reference to the title of this post. The top photo is the same cloud from the bottom photo but cropped and enhanced to look more like a death cloud, which I think it does there. But I got some better fielding shots today than I normally did.

Asheboro at night

Got bored and went out around 12:30am and got back in around 1:30. Had a police lady ask me what I was shooting, she said she had to ask because "of all the terrorism" like Al-Qaida has Asheboro pinned for their next attack.

Tonights game vs Gastonia

Asheboro was keeping it close tonight. Maybe they are trying to play better since they just broke their nine game losing streak.

Vs Martinsville

Asheboro got stomped again 10-1 by the Martinsville Mustangs. The guy on the top got his helmet knocked off I just shot to early to really see that happened.

Zoo Plants

I was bored today so I went to the zoo to take some random shots and to just walk around. These are some of the cool plants I saw there.

July 4th Game

The Copperheads hosted the Gastonia Grizzlies on the 4th of July in a packed house at McCrary Park. The Copperheads lost 7-2.

Nothing turned out from the game. The score was 18-2 guess who lost...These turned out nice i thought, the bottom two have gradient maps on them and the top one is unsharp masked and that is it. Better luck tomorrow I hope.

Military All-Stars vs Copperheads

The Copperheads played an exhibition game vs the U.S. Military All-Star team and put a beat down on them 12-4. They are 2-0 on exhibition game, why can't they win the games that count?

Water Droplets

I took some shots of my moms plants cause I was walking by and saw all the droplets on the leaves and thought it would be cool to shoot. What do you think? The bottom two photos have a gradient map on them and the top one does not.

The team was actually getting hits and hit two home runs before I left!! It was a cloudy, rainy, and wet game. Next game is tomorrow night.

Shooting with Trey, Elisa, and Stew

I wasnt really shooting with them I was just kinda hanging out while they shot and had me and Elisa run back to the school because they forgot alot of stuff but I took some photos of surrounding stuff also. I wish I had gotten the whole car in the frame on the middle photo.

Opening Day

The Asheboro Copperheads had their first home game of the season vs the Gastonia Grizzlies. Asheboro won the game 8-6 and had a fireworks show at the end of the game.

Copperheads exhibition game

The Copperheads had an exhibition game vs the Post 45 varsity team Tuesday at McCrary Park. This was my first time shooting the team and their first home game is on Friday June 1st. Some of the shots are really grainy, because the games start at 7pm, so get used to see it.

Grasshoppers Baseball

These are the best shots that I got from the Grasshoppers vs Asheville Tourists. There was almost no action in the field at all, except for like two nice plays that I missed or where soft. So there were a lot of battings, maybe next time I go they will put on a better show. Oh and they lost 3-0.

Light Pole

This is a light pole in front of my house. I was really bored and wanted to shoot something but it was like 11 pm so didnt have much to shoot. But I think it looks cool in a crappy night shot sort of way.

Martinsville Speedway

These are some of the better shots that I took while I was at Martinsville Speedway on April 1st. I just got them in the mail earlier this week so that is why I'm just now posting them. The first shot is a guy sitting literally in a sea of tires. The middle shot is one of the teams members taking a quick nap before the truck race starts. And the bottom photo are cars pulling out of the garage for an hour of practice the day before their race.
